L‘lecció de Donald Trump com a president dels Estats Units ha suposat una gran empenta per als independentistes de Califòrnia, convençuts que els EUA no serveixen als interessos de Califòrnia ni a nivell econòmic, ni financer, ni de defensa, ni el medi ambient, i que sent una nació independent els hi anirien millor les coses.
Poc després que es confirmés que Donald Trump es convertiria en president electe, es van produir reaccions de protesta a les xarxes socials i arreu del territori dels Estats Units, i molt especialment a Califòrnia on el moviment independentista Yes California va reaccionar ràpidament a la xarxa impulsant el hashtag #Calexit (emulant el #Brexit) i participant en les manifestacions de protesta contra Trump al carrer. La plataforma Yes Califòrnia es va crear l’agost de 2016 amb l’objectiu d’impulsar un referèndum d’independència previst per al 2019. Aquesta campanya està liderada per Louis J. Marinelli, membre del California National Party.
Els resultats de les eleccions presidencials Califòrnia, amb prop de 40 milions d’habitants i una adjudicació de 55 escons en el Congrés, han posat en evidència les diferències en les preferències electorals:
- Hillary Clinton (Partit Demòcrata): 5.589.936 vots (61,5%)
- Donald Trump (Partit Republicà): 3.021.085 vots (33,2%)
- Gary Johnson (Partit Lliberatari): 2889.310 vots (3,2%)
- Jill Stein (Partit Verd): 155.706 vots (1,7%)
- Gloria Estela La Riva (Pau i Llibertat): 38.880 vots (0,4%)
Cal destacar que els principals líders de la Cambra legislativa de Califòrnia van emetre un comunicat conjunt el mateix 9 de novembre arran dels resultats de les eleccions presidencial. El comunicat, que reproduïm a continuació, manifesta de forma clara l’orgull de pertinença a Califòrnia i la voluntat dels càrrecs electes de Califòrnia de liderar la resistència contra el mandat de D. Trump.
Today, we woke up feeling like strangers in a foreign land, because yesterday Americans expressed their views on a pluralistic and democratic society that are clearly inconsistent with the values of the people of California.
We have never been more proud to be Californians.
By a margin in the millions, Californians overwhelmingly rejected politics fueled by resentment, bigotry, and misogyny.
The largest state of the union and the strongest driver of our nation’s economy has shown it has its surest conscience as well.
California is – and must always be – a refuge of justice and opportunity for people of all walks, talks, ages and aspirations – regardless of how you look, where you live, what language you speak, or who you love.
California has long set an example for other states to follow. And California will defend its people and our progress. We are not going to allow one election to reverse generations of progress at the height of our historic diversity, scientific advancement, economic output, and sense of global responsibility.
We will be reaching out to federal, state and local officials to evaluate how a Trump Presidency will potentially impact federal funding of ongoing state programs, job-creating investments reliant on foreign trade, and federal enforcement of laws affecting the rights of people living in our state. We will maximize the time during the presidential transition to defend our accomplishments using every tool at our disposal.
While Donald Trump may have won the presidency, he hasn’t changed our values. America is greater than any one man or party. We will not be dragged back into the past. We will lead the resistance to any effort that would shred our social fabric or our Constitution.
California was not a part of this nation when its history began, but we are clearly now the keeper of its future.
